When we think of time travel, we usually imagine sci-fi stories, teleportation, or time machines. However, sometimes we don't need any technology other than our imagination and traveler's will to go back in time. Istria and Kvarner, two beautiful regions on the northeastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, offer the opportunity for such a journey through time. These two regions abound in medieval fortifications and castles that preserve the stories and secrets of past times.
Istria: Cities based on medieval foundations
Pazin
Pazin as the capital of the Istrian region carries on its back a history dating back to Roman times, but is especially known for its medieval fortress. The Pazin fortress, known as kaštel, seems like an impregnable fortress on top of a rock. Her imposing presence over Pazin testifies to the key position it has held throughout history. During the Middle Ages, this fortress was the heart of the region's defense against various military threats and changes of government. By studying its thick walls, towers, and defensive facilities, you can delve deep into the medieval times of Istria. Fortress Pazin played a key role in many historical conflicts and changes of government on the Istrian peninsula. During different periods, it was under the rule of various feudal lords, including the Bishops of Poreč, the Habsburg Monarchy, and the Venetian Republic. Its walls have witnessed many military operations and social changes that have shaped the region. Today, the Pazin Fortress is not only a monument of the past but also a cultural center. Within it is the Ethnographic Museum of Istria, which offers a fascinating insight into the traditional way of life and culture of the region. The museum shows visitors various aspects of Istrian life through the centuries, including customs, craftsmanship, and everyday life of the local population. Through exhibitions, artifacts, and interactive presentations, the museum enables visitors to deeply understand and appreciate the rich cultural heritage of Istria.
Motovun
Motovun, another Istrian jewel surrounded by walls and forests, seems to have remained untouched by time. This hilly town offers beautiful views of the Mirna River valley. During the Middle Ages, Motovun was a vitally fortified settlement whose walls and cultural heritage were crucial for its defense and identity. The impressive walls and towers of Motovun represent not only an outstanding example of medieval architecture but also an archaeological treasure that testifies to the turbulent history of the region. Motovun was ruled over time by various feudal lords, including the Venetian Republic and the Habsburg Monarchy, and these walls were often the last line of defense against invaders. Walking through the narrow cobbled streets of Motovun, visitors plunge into the atmosphere of past times.
Pula
Although Pula is known for its ancient heritage, like the amphitheater known as the Arena, this city also has its medieval charms. One of these fascinating places is castle Kaštel which rises on top of the hill above the city and offers an incredible panoramic view of Pula and its surroundings. Castle Kaštel, located on a hill, has exceptional historical and architectural significance. Although it was built in the Middle Ages, this castle enchants with its architecture and charm. It was built on the foundations of an ancient Roman temple, and its role throughout history was to protect the city of Pula from various threats. One of the greatest treasures of Castle Kaštel is the spectacular panoramic view that offers the city of Pula and its surroundings. From the walls of the castle, you can enjoy the view of the bell towers of churches, old town streets, and the famous amphitheater Arena that rises above the city. This is an ideal place to take photos and watch the sunset when the whole of Pula is illuminated by orange light. In addition to the castle itself, the courtyard of the Castle Kaštel should be highlighted. Here you can find traditional oysters, a promenade, and many picturesque corners where you can relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

But don't worry, because lately more and more communities are recognizing the need for tourists who want to take their dogs with them on vacation. Because of this, they opened special sections of beaches or even entire beaches intended for dogs. You will recognize dog beaches by the round sign with the image of a dog or by the official flag of dog beaches with the dog bone logo on a blue-green-yellow background.

Here you will be able to enjoy the beautiful view of the open sea, extreme beauty with the scents of the Mediterranean pine forest and a rich gastronomic offer for you and a four-legged tuft.
Another of the excellent and well-groomed beaches is Portić in Peroj.

We were allowed to vacation at Villa Zorina for a week and were more than thrilled. The handling and mediation via Ema went completely smoothly and she always responded in no time. When we arrived at the villa, we were very warmly welcomed by owner Zoran and his wife and they felt right at home. After a short introduction, he gave us a tour of the villa and showed us everything. You have everything you need: from a fully equipped kitchen, washing machine, dryer, 4 separate bathrooms adjoining the 4 bedrooms, 2 additional toilets, music system in the living room as well as in the outdoor area, gas grill in the covered outdoor area, sauna, as well as a heated outdoor pool, a hot tub at the top of the terrace and much more. The owner Zoran was always available, warm and took care of every small concern. A very clear recommendation from us to vacation at Villa Zorina. Dear Zoran, We'll be back.
